women and the bible reading list
The following are books on my self about women of the bible and feminist perspective on the bible. I think that the words ’feminism’ and the ‘bible’ shouldn’t be in the same sentence as it is placing our own understanding on God and His word. Anyhow, they are all worth dipping into. I am really enjoying Discovering Biblical Equality at the moment. It is addressing some of the most talked about passages in the Bible referring to women and their role in church. I shall say no more.

As a women studying for the ministry I wanted to have a section which specifically looked at women in ministy and women in the Bible. I have started by having a look around to find out what is on the blogosphere and the results are listed below.
I also came across a number of other useful sites and circles that women working in ministry can join. I’m sure that there are many, many more out there which I will have missed. So, from time to time, I will add more to the foot of this page.
- The Jesus Creed is written by Scot Mcknight and among other interesting reads, he has a large number of interesting posts on womens ministry.
- Women in Ministry dialogues on the issue of women in ministry and the freedom for women to teach the bible in a public setting.
- God’s Word to Women has a number of vignettes on women in the Bible which are worth reading. They also take a look at the life of Junia, here and here as well as one on women prophets and one explaining the background to Paul’s letter which tells women to keep silent in church
- If you think the journey through seminary is difficlut for women, take a moment to think about who difficult it would be through distance learning. That’s exactly what you can read about over at faithful seminarian.
- Onehandclapping has a rather long but interesting read on women in the emerging Church movement, the unintentional message sent out by men even when supportive of women in ministry with suggestions on what steps can be taken to postively support women.
- Levellers has a list of women theology bloggers out there and is making a call for information on more. Check them out.
- Eternal Echoes retells the story of Sarah and Martha. The site does not really address the issue of women in ministry but the posts are an interesting retelling of some familiar stories.
- Sisters of Esther tackles head on opposition to women in ministry and responds by giving an account for women in the Bible. Sadly the site hasn’t been updated since March.
- There are plenty of opportunities for women in ministry to get connected particularly here on the internet. It is possibly easier to get connected on the internet rather than in our churches. Why is that? Answers on a postcard can be sent to … Anyway, there are various fora including Revgalblogpals for women clergy, those discerning a call for ministry and anyone supporting women church professionals and women in religious life. Emerging Women is part of the emerging chuch movement and is administered by Julie Clawson at Onehandclapping. And Christian Women Online is another generic space for women who blog. Issues discussed range from adoption to personal spiritual journeys to homelife and inspiration.
- Faith in a Dress is a blog that came out of a extensive number of submissions which came forward for an women only entry on Porpoise Diving Life. All of which are worth reading but it will take some time. I counted 32. The site hasn’t been updated since going up in June but I hope that this forum will continue to grow and that it will become another place for women to flourish. At any rate, some of the contributers have their own sites.
Aside from blogs and webrings, there are also some good and useful resources on iTunes Here a just a few.
- Pastor Kerri Weems has a number of podcasts on iTunes celebrating and givine encouragement to reach our God given potential.
- Also on iTunes are these podcasts by IBC Ministering to Women
- Faithbridge Women’s Ministry meets weekly and a recording of their talks is available on iTunes also and a large selection on based on the women in the Bible.
- Harvest Women’s Bible Fellowship has a series of online Bible studies by women for women on iTunes. The current set of studies takes a look at the greatness of God through the story of Moses.

I came across this rather long read byDr Katharine Bushnell (1856-1946) who was a physician, missionary, crusader, reformer, author and speaker as well as a scholar who spoke seven languages and was grounded in Greek and Hebrew. She wrote on the scriptural status of women and the spiritual subjugation of women. She the last years of her life writing and sharing God’s original and unchanging intent for women. An online version of her book is available at God’s Word to Women.
I can’t vouch for the theological accuaracy of any of these sites nor do they reflect my view point.
If you come across any more intersting or useful sites, please let me know.

Have you read Cullen Murphy’s The Word According to Eve: Women and the Bible in Ancient Times and Our Own? It’s a easy-reading introduction to some of the scholars and issues in this field.
I’ve also enjoyed The InterVarsity Press Women’s Bible Commentary, and found it helpful in preparing sermons.
